A New Idea in Horse Rescue
For The Horse Equine Rescue is in the process of creating a new type of rescue program.
We've named the program Horses 4 Horses.
As everyone in the non-profit arena knows, donations are hard to come by. This is especially true now, in these difficult economic times. Needing to solicit donations is not only difficult, it's time consuming and requires additional personnel.
We think we've come up with a unique twist that will allow the rescue - which will become Horses 4 Horses - to not only sustain itself, but to help Thoroughbred racehorses in general, as well as, hopefully, inspiring others to help them.
The idea is simple - take in racehorses that are still sound. Rehab them and race them. Aside from the actual expenses incurred, all the money earned by the horses will go TO the horses. Certainly they've earned it!
The money will not just support the racehorses, but all the horses at the rescue. Hopefully, it will be enough to allow us to rescue even more.
This program is made possible for us because founder Maureen Tierney is a licensed trainer - so our expenses will be very minimal. In the future, if the program is successful, a salaried position, with the standard 10% trainer's share of the winning purse would hopefully allow the rescue to find a trainer with a desire to help horses as well. One who would rather run the rescue than train publicly.
We are certain that there will be people who will not see this as rescue, but as exploitation. We understand their position, though we disagree. Exploitation is when someone benefits from someone else's efforts. This is the horses benefiting from their own efforts. And if they are successful, they will be supporting other horses, not people. I would agree that it would not be "rescue" if the horses were to be treated as the average racehorse. But our horses will have a natural life living out in herd and training/racing will be only a small portion of their day - less than 5%.
If we are successful in finding horses who can still win, we will not only offer them a home for life, we will at the same time show that horses can be treated well (as horses think of well - not people), and also show the racing world that the horses deserve some of the money they earn.
We are in the process of purchasing a yearling filly (she will be 2 in less than a month) for Horses 4 Horses.
