Year End Update

                       Spotlight

Since For The Horse Equine Rescue was founded we have rescued 5 horses - Libby, Willow, Rosie, Miracle, and Belle.  Willow and Miracle both found new homes, Rosie had a foal (Rainmaker), and the rest have bonded and become herd members.  Of course Rainmaker actually raises our number of rescues to six.

We were fortunate to get several donations, despite not yet having 501(c)3 status, and extend our heartfelt thanks to all who sent money or other items.

We have heard from the IRS!!  They had some additional questions and we submitted our responses just after Christmas.  Hopefully we will be getting our letter of determination shortly

The Future

FTH Direction for the New Year - 2007

As the contact for FTH, I have gotten several emails this fall from owners looking for homes for their horses.  While I do sympathize with people who truly need to get rid of their horses - for whatever reason - I am not sympathetic to all people looking to find homes for their equine.

As we move into our 3rd year of operation I feel that we need to change the perception and expectations of people regarding aging equines.  There appears to be a widespread belief that people are just waiting in line to be lucky enough to take in aging horses and pampering them for the rest of their lives.  This is completely untrue and we need to help people understand that it is not the case.

FTH needs to help educate those we come in contact with regarding the realities of life for aging horses.  The truth is that many people want to get rid of their old horses without guilt or responsibility.  They look to rescues, like FTH, to eagerly take those horses in and thereby solve their problem of an unwanted horse and assuage whatever guilt they might have.

The future of horse rescue must go beyond just taking in horses and caring for them and/or rehoming them.  We need to solve the problem of unwanted horses where it begins - with horse owners.  By helping horse owners - and potential horse owners - understand the responsibilities involved in having equines.

There is much more to running a successful horse rescue than just taking in horses and caring for them.

While that is the rewarding and enjoyable part, there are other equally vital actions that need to be taken.  First and foremost among those is planning for the future.  Following are questions that FTH needs to consider.

Where does FTH want to be next year?

In 5 years?

In 10 years?

What is our strategy for self-sustainability?

What are our long-term goals?

How will we implement our programs?

These are just a few of the issues which each and every rescue needs to address.

In short, no organization can be successful without having a plan and focusing on what needs to be done to implement that plan.

As we begin this New Year, we have our work cut out for us!  it is our hope that many of you will be with us on this journey.
