Getting Ready
for the New Year |
Spotlight |
|
We have taken in 3 new horses
this summer; Shadowfax, Friday, and Bob. Bob was only here a week
before going to his foster home! Shadowfax and Friday are
still with us, as they need some rehabilitation time. They have
settled in and become members of the herd. |
Seeking new Board Members. FTH is
looking for individuals willing to donate their time and effort. If you are
interested in helping us grow and would like to be an active Board
member, please contact us at

Shadowfax: She is a 9 year old registered
American Warmblood, half TB and half Hanoverian. Shadow has
navicular and is now receiving a natural barefoot trim and improving.
She is 17 hands tall (Matt, who is holding her is almost 6'3").
|
|

Friday: He is a 17 year old QH with quite a history! He
was shot in the face as a foal and broke his shoulder as a 4
year old. Clearly he is a tough survivor. Friday has
a slight case of laminitis and is getting better as he grows new
feet.
Friday and Shadow
came from the same home. Sadly their owner needed to get
rid of all her horses (8) due to upcoming surgery. They
were the last 2 left and were to be euthanized if homes couldn't
be found for them. Fortunately we were able to take them in.

Bob: He is a 6 year old Thoroughbred who Maureen trimmed last
year before his owner took over his hoofcare herself.
Circumstances forced her to get rid of him, and since Bob is
such a loving and laid-back guy we had to take him in. A
young couple was looking for a horse just like Bob, so he was
only here a week! He is shown above at his foster home. |

Legacy
|
|
Legacy was humanely
euthanized in June for a problem related to tumors common in gray
horses. He had enjoyed 3 years (almost to the day) with us and his
"family" of Huey, Lucy, Roxie, and Bettina, as well as the rescues he
befriended when they were introduced to the herd. He was always
the one to take them under his wing and make them feel welcome.
His most recent "protege" was Leo. It was Legacy who showed Leo
what horse language was and who taught him not to be afraid.

|
|
Leo |
|
When he first came to
us, Leo had only known life in a stall; first with his mother,
and then alone. He had no idea how to be part of an equine
social group, and his experiences with humans had been such that
he dissociated frequently. Legacy welcomed him to the herd
and acted as interpreter. Leo's communication skills were
so poor that Legacy, who normally yielded his grain to whoever
wanted it - including Agnes the sheep while she was with us! -
actually taught Leo that being driven away didn't mean he should
leave town - only move back. After a few weeks Leo
was eating with the rest of the herd and had made more
friends. He also had become friendly to people, expecting
good things instead of bad.
Leo's physical issues
caused him discomfort and made it difficult and tiring for him
to get around. Once he realized that life could be positive he
was released from his broken body to join his friend Legacy.
